Ylang ylang is a tropical tree with yellowish-white flowers of intense exotic fragrance. It is also called “flower of flowers”. Ylang tree can grow up to 20 m, and its aromatic flowers continue to blossom throughout the year. It is a highly appreciated oil in the perfume industry and it is the base note of some of the world’s most popular perfumes. Interestingly enough, the flowers, which grow in wilderness, do not have such an intense scent as those cultivated by people.

Ylang ylang essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of freshly picked flowers. Flowers are picked in the early morning when the concentration of essential oil is at its height. It takes 60 kg of flowers to produce 1 kg of essential oil. Because of its beautiful scent, it has been used since ancient times as aphrodisiac as well as for frigidity and impotence. It has traditionally been used for high blood pressure, hysteria, nervousness, insomnia and stress-related tachycardia. Because of its feminine and exotic scent, it is a favorite ingredient of body care blends.
